Barlow Respiratory Hospital Partners with American Lung Association for Better Breathers Club / Lung Rangers Support Group

March 1, 2019 – Los Angeles – Barlow Respiratory Hospital has announced a partnership with the American Lung Association to blend Lung Rangers, the hospital’s support group for former Barlow patients, and Better Breathers Club. The result is an expanded FREE support group open to the community. The group is for people living with a chronic lung condition and guests and meets every other month. Attendees enjoy a delicious lunch and an informative education session as well as social time.

The purpose of the group is to offer patient-centered and community-based educational opportuni­ties and support to persons with chronic lung disease (especially COPD, but also asthma, pulmonary fibrosis, lung cancer and other chronic lung diseases) and their families, friends and support persons. The group also works to improve the quality of life and functional status for members by providing disease-specific education and emotional connection which may prevent exacerbations requiring medical care to reduce the health, economic and social burden of lung disease.

Barlow Respiratory Hospital is the only not-for-profit respiratory hospital in Los Angeles and is recognized for excellence in treating medically complex patients dependent on a ventilator to breathe.

Barlow Respiratory Hospital a long-term care hospital (LTCH) founded in 1902. Patients are referred by nearly 100 regional hospital Intensive Care Units for the specialty care the hospital provides as a national leader in Ventilator Weaning. Barlow Respiratory Hospital has been awarded the Gold Seal of Approval® for Respiratory Failure Certification by the Joint Commission which establishes the hospital as a recognized expert in ventilator weaning and management. There are less than one dozen hospitals nationwide that have achieved this certification and Barlow is the first on the West Coast. Barlow has also earned the Passy Muir designation as a Center of Excellence, the only one in the Western United States. The designation was awarded as a result of demonstration of a high standard of care for patients with tracheostomies, on and off the ventilator.
