ReBuild Barlow

We invite you to support the Campaign to ReBuild Barlow to strengthen and sustain the hospital and to provide uninterrupted specialty care throughout the each step of this multi-phased plan.

For more than a century, Barlow Respiratory Hospital has specialized in caring exclusively for patients with respiratory illness and complex medical conditions. Whether patients are referred to us after a catastrophic accident or a cascade of medical complications, our interdisciplinary team, including board certified physicians, registered nurses and team of respiratory and rehabilitation therapists, work together with the goal of achieving the best outcomes for our patients.

Barlow Respiratory Hospital is small, with a tight-knit teamwork approach to serving our patients. Physicians and family members trust our expertise and our reputation for extraordinary kindness and exceptional care. Many patients and families tell us they appreciate the feeling of family here at Barlow.

Our beautiful historic main campus is nestled in a hillside near downtown Los Angeles.

Over the past several years, we faced daunting challenges. We were threatened with a looming 2020 deadline to make the hospital seismically compliant. We feared we may have to abandon both our current building and our desire to fulfill our mission in a modern patient care space. We were forced to re-evaluate our options for a new hospital building. After some soul-searching and comprehensive engineering study, we realized we could build a brand new hospital within an adjoining underutilized structure.

Our Master Plan to ReBuild Barlow reflects a significant rethinking of how to support the life-saving care provided to patients served by Barlow and you can support this important plan by making a contribution to the Campaign to ReBuild Barlow today.

Reinforce | Rebuild

After extensive study, we determined an innovative way to move forward with a plan to increase the size of the hospital and expand services at a much lower cost than previously projected. This new Master Plan to ReBuild Barlow included a major seismic upgrade and is poised to bring our long-planned hospital expansion and modernization project to fruition.

Hospital structures built between 1902 and 1983 required seismic reinforcement and additional upgrades. The multi-phased project, now complete, included a required seismic reinforcement and retrofit to structurally upgrade our existing facility. We are now preparing to move forward with a major renovation. This will rebuild the hospital from the inside out within the walls of an adjacent hospital building.

As Barlow Respiratory Hospital begins this process, we share a look at the progress and welcome you to envision the future as our new hospital building takes shape. Look for a more in a series of short videos as we progress.

This dramatic change will have minimal exterior impact and will result in a brand new state-of-the-art hospital within our existing walls and will enhance services on our Los Angeles main campus.

The new, updated facility will create comfortable spaces for patients and families and will provide ample space to accommodate state-of-the-art medical equipment. The facility will incorporate new technologies and advances in medicine to expand our expertise and fulfill our mission to serve individuals with respiratory illness and complex medical conditions.
