The Master Plan and The Campaign to ReBuild Barlow

For more than a century, Barlow Respiratory Hospital has specialized in caring exclusively for patients with respiratory illness and complex medical conditions. Whether patients are referred to us after a catastrophic accident or a cascade of medical complications, our interdisciplinary team, including board certified physicians, registered nurses and licensed therapists, work together with the goal of achieving the best outcomes for our patients.

Barlow Respiratory Hospital is small, with a tight-knit teamwork approach to serving our patients. Physicians and family members  trust our expertise and our reputation for extraordinary kindness and exceptional care. Many patients and families tell us they appreciate the feeling of family here at Barlow.

Our beautiful historic main campus is nestled in a hillside near downtown Los Angeles.

Over the past several years, we faced daunting challenges. We were threatened with a looming 2020 deadline to make the hospital seismically compliant. We feared we may have to abandon both our current building and our desire to fulfill our mission in a modern patient care space. We were forced to re-evaluate our options for a new hospital building. After some soul-searching and comprehensive engineering study, we realized we could build a brand new hospital within an adjoining underutilized structure.

Our Master Plan to ReBuild Barlow reflects a significant rethinking of how to support the life-saving care provided to patients served by Barlow and you can support this important plan by making a contribution to the Campaign to ReBuild Barlow today.

Reinforce | ReBuild

After extensive study, we have determined an innovative way to move forward with a plan to increase the size of the hospital and expand services at a much lower cost than previously projected. This new Master Plan to ReBuild Barlow includes a major seismic upgrade and brings our long-planned hospital expansion and modernization project to fruition.

Hospital structures built between 1902 and 1983 required seismic reinforcement and additional upgrades. The multi-phased project, which is in the early stages of implementation, concludes the required major seismic retrofit and allows the hospital to continue to operate while a new hospital is being constructed.

  • We will not break ground on a new facility.
  • We will seismically reinforce and structurally upgrade our existing facility.
  • We will rebuild the hospital from the inside out within the walls of an existing hospital building.

This dramatic change will have minimal exterior impact and will result in a brand new state-of-the-art hospital within our existing walls and will enhance services on our
Los Angeles main campus.

The new, updated facility, expected to be completed by 2022, will create comfortable spaces for patients and families and will provide ample space to accommodate state-of-the-art medical equipment. The facility will incorporate new technologies and advances in medicine to fulfill our mission to serve individuals with chronic critical illnesses and complex respiratory conditions.

Barlow’s Legacy of Care

When we ReBuild Barlow, we protect Barlow’s historic assets in a beautiful setting with a legacy of personalized, team-based care.

The facility will add much needed resources — upgraded and expanded patient rooms; a modern surgical suite and intensive care unit; spaces for equipment; and room to make the most of new and evolving technologies.

This ambitious campaign will activate previous commitments to the hospital campaign and will enhance endowment funds to uphold Barlow’s mission into the future.

We invite you to support the Campaign to ReBuild Barlow to strengthen and sustain the hospital and to provide uninterrupted specialty care throughout the each step of the multi-phased plan.

Expand | Enhance

When we ReBuild Barlow, we will expand to provide more spacious, and more private, patient rooms. We will enhance our patient and family experience with a welcoming lounge and new lobby for families. We will create a soothing overall environment with a meditation room and a healing garden.

We will enable our physicians to make the most of new technologies and advances in medicine.

We will provide the advantage of an expanded intensive care unit, new imaging equipment and a new surgical suite.

When We ReBuild Barlow, Our New Hospital Will:

  • Reinforce Our Historic 1927 Hospital Building
  • Increase 6 Open Bed Count ICU Unit to a New 8 Private Bed Count ICU Unit
  • Increase Bed Count
  • Increase Single Room Size from 140 sq ft to 267 sq ft
  • Increase Shared Room Size from 205 sq ft to 450 sq ft
  • Build a New Therapy Suite
  • Build a New Radiology Suite
  • Build a Surgical Suite for On-site Procedures
