For Physicians

When Your Patients Need Us, We Are Here

Patients who are deemed medically stable after prolonged hospitalization in an intensive care unit (ICU) can be considered for ventilator weaning or additional critical care services at Barlow Respiratory Hospital.

Patients can be transferred to Barlow Respiratory Hospital from the ICU of any medical facility in the Los Angeles metropolitan area and Southern California. We are recognized for our nearly 60% ventilator weaning success rate, one of the highest in the nation. We partner and coordinate care with admitting physicians and hospitals to hospitals to ensure continuity of care. Physicians, you can refer patients to Barlow Respiratory Hospital for our specialized care even if you do not have an existing affiliation.

Weaning Success

Barlow Respiratory Hospital weaning success rate has been over 50% each of the last 10 years and remains among the highest in the nation. Our annual Outcomes Book publications provide detailed data on weaning success rates.

Award-Winning Excellence

Barlow Respiratory Hospital was awarded Gold Seal of Approval® for Disease Specific Certification for Wound Care by the Joint Commission, one of a handful of hospitals nationwide to achieve this elite certification. Barlow was also awarded designation as the only West Coast Passy-Muir Center of Excellence, recognized for treating patients with tracheostomies, on and off the ventilator.

Ventilator Weaning Program

Over half of the patients who come to Barlow for weaning are weaned in less than two weeks using our TIPS© weaning protocol. Over 300 patients a year are discharged from our Ventilator Weaning Program.

Barlow interdisciplinary Ventilator Weaning Program team consists of pulmonologists, nurses, case managers, respiratory therapists, rehabilitation professionals (physical therapists, occupational therapists, and speech-language pathologists) clinical dietitians, social workers, and pharmacists.

Patients are assessed daily for weaning readiness and ability but weaning attempts cannot continue indefinitely. As an LTCH, the average patient stays with us for around 28 days, as we establish goals of care, treatment, and discharge plan. Barlow Case Managers work with patients and family members to establish discharge plans to the next level of care, whether that is home or to another facility.
